Monitoring may be useful when surgical removal is anticipated. The x-ray allows the doctor to determine if the tooth is still impacted or not.

Also, since there is no need for sedation, local anesthesia or even an appointment in most cases with digital x-rays, they are easier than traditional dental radiographs and pose less of a risk than more invasive procedures like CT scans and MRI's.
